Howdy Fans in HuskerLand,

Well, this Saturday the Huskers have the Hokies of Virginia Tech on their thoughts.

In fact, all week, they’ve thought of little else besides eating, sleeping, and booking! Not gambling, but studying!

The Huskers’ two wins are already history in this young 2009 season, but a No. 14 ranked team is itching to make cornmeal of the Cornhuskers.

The Hokies know that the Huskers (at No. 18 by USA Today) haven’t beaten a ranked team on the road in about a decade, but me thinks the Hokies will be in for a surprise.

The Huskers have whipped the Hokies in thought many times over in hard practice all this week, but now it’s reality time. The Huskers leave today for Blacksburg, Virginia, where they’ll face the Hokies in kickoff at 2:30 Nebraska time tomorrow and 12:30 on our San Diego clocks.

So, how does it look for Coach Bo Pelini’s second-year team? The coach says his team will be mostly ready – but especially QB Zac Lee.

The Huskers will find out if the Hokies are pretenders or contenders!

Virginia Tech’s Lane Field was ranked the “Scariest Place to Play” last year by ESPN because of the noise of Hokie fans. Their stadium seats a little over 66,000. So, the question: Memorial in Lincoln has over 88,000 fans trying out their lungs, so can Lane’s decibels be more scary? Just between me and the corn silk, I think it’s only hokey-pokey baloney talk.

Critics say the Huskers have a lot to fear in the Hokies quarterback and field goal blockers, but I say we have a wonderful quarterback in Zac Lee, a junior. Precision should be his middle name, as in Zac P. Lee. Recall the long pass to Mike McNeill, who was speeding down the side and looked up and the ball dropped into his hands. He was onto a TD for 32 yards. Now that’s precision.

A Nebraska writer says our 2-game winning quarterback is ‘E-Zac-Lee” the type of leader the Huskers need to win. He runs, he dodges, he thinks, he reads, he throws. The outlook for 2009 seemed bleak when QB Joe Ganz was lost to graduation, and then when No. 2 Patrick Witt flew the coop, or laid an egg, what’s up? Anyways, he’s history.

The Huskers are fortunate that Zac, the No. 3 last year, has the natural skills for the job. He made some great plays in the Spring Game, so when the opportunity came, Zac strutted his stuff. The No. 2 QB Cody Green, a freshman, is no slouch either. Big things are expected in the years ahead with Green at the helm.

So, with all the talk about whether Nebraska is ready to take on the Hokies, I say remember last year. Even with their QB’s great talents, the Huskers had the game won when the Hokies didn’t make a 1st down with a few minutes left. The Huskers were cited for a late hit when Ndamukong Suh couldn’t stop his momentum and his hands touched the downed Hokie, who was out of bounds. Replays showed Suh was trying to avoid the player. Then Coach Bo was penalized for cussing out the official. The Hokies ended up close to the goal line. Nebraska had a few seconds left, but a pass to Todd Peterson by Ganz was batted down. Hokies won 35-30.

This year will be different. Most national writers and website predict the Hokies will win by 7 points or so. I predict the Huskers will win by 10. OK, you can shoot me and you’ll have to write this next week!!
